Description: PreColumbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture ca. 750 to 1370 CE. An ornately carved dark wood snuff tray or tablet in the form of a shallow rectangular bowl with curved edges. On its underside is a beautiful hand-carved symmetrical motif of two low relief sea birds, depicted in flight, their bodies set within shallow diamond frames surrounded by interlocking diagonal lines. Avian figures are connected to the sacred and noble in Sican culture: the Sican Deity is often depicted as a bird, real and metal bird feathers ornamented royalty, and murals at the temple mounds of Ucupe and Huaca El Corte show rituals conducted by people adorned in feathered costumes. The birds depicted here connect the iconography on this piece with the Gods. Size: 3.25" W x 1.5" H on included custom stand ex: private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s
