RARE 1913 British Cartoon - MILITANT SUFFRAGE SATIRE House Burning GUY FAWKES

Description: THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER"Coming to our bonfire?"Ra-THER. Whose house are you burning?"+ Punch magazine treated women's suffrage impartially until the militant sect became active, then Punch began satirizing the movement, such as in this cartoon.+ Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain, involving bonfires and fireworks displays. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605 O.S., when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. The Catholic plotters had intended to assassinate Protestant king James I and his parliament. Celebrating that the king had survived, people lit bonfires around London. Months later, the Observance of 5th November Act mandated an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failureSOURCE: This is an original cartoon from British Punch magazine of humor and satire, drawn by G. L. Stampa and published November 5, 1913, and pulled from the magazine, original not a modern reproduction. Cartoon as shown in the first image measures 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, the page itself measures 8 x 10 1/2 inches, including borders. Pictured image is slightly cropped. CONDITION: excellent -- bright and clean, the page has been humidified and flattened for best appearance (and for framing); both the front and backsides have unrelated text. ______________________________________________________Other British Punch women's suffrage cartoons listed. WHAT IS PUNCH?Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. Punch was the world's most celebrated magazine of wit and satire. From its early years as a campaigner for social justice to its transformation into national icon, Punch played a central role in the formation of British identity -- and how the rest of the world saw the British nation. In its formative years Punch combined humors, illustration and political debate with a fresh and radical audacity. During its heyday in the late 1800s, it reflected the conservative views of the growing middle-classes and copies of it could be found in the libraries of diplomats, cabinet ministers and even royalty. In the Western world, Punch played a significant role in the development of satire. In the world of illustration, it practically revolutionized it. Over the decades as it charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable source of cartoon art, satire, but as primary source material for historians.
