Description: UNTITLED CARTOON -- PUNCH PERIODICAL VOLUME NUMBER PAGE § This cartoon was published July 1, 1914, and WW1 began the week previous, but apparently too late for this cartoon to be altered (if need be) as the issue with Ireland was eventually superseded and put on hold for most of the war. § In the summer of 1914, Ireland, which was then part of the United Kingdom, was on the brink of civil war due to tensions over Home Rule, a controversial policy that would grant Ireland limited self-government. Those in favor of Home Rule, the Irish Volunteers, and those against it, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), organized their own armed forces. Tensions increased when British soldiers opened fire on an Irish Volunteer gunrunning operation in Dublin on July 26, 1914, killing four people and wounding 40. However, the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 averted civil war as both sides instead joined the British war effort. In total, Ireland supplied 200,000 men to fight against Germany, including the 10th (Irish) Division, the 16th (Irish) Division, and the 36th (Ulster) Division.SOURCE: This is an original cartoon from British Punch humor/satire magazine, drawn by Bernard Partridge, and published July 1, 1914 and pulled from the magazine, original not a modern reproduction. Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. Punch was the world's most celebrated magazine of wit and satire. From its early years as a campaigner for social justice to its transformation into national icon, Punch played a central role in the formation of British identity -- and how the rest of the world saw the British nation. In its formative years Punch combined humors, illustration and political debate with a fresh and radical audacity. During its heyday in the late 1800s, it reflected the conservative views of the growing middle-classes and copies of it could be found in the libraries of diplomats, cabinet ministers and even royalty. In the Western world, Punch played a significant role in the development of satire. In the world of illustration, it practically revolutionized it. Over the decades as it charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable source of cartoon art, satire, but as primary source material for historians.
