This Japanese cutlass was sourced from the United States during Japan's adoption of Western military tactics. This sword is dated 1897 in Japanese kanji. This early Japanese naval cutlass would make an important addition to any collection. This Civil War model 1860 naval cutlass was made by Ames Mfg. The blade measures 26" long. The blade is 5/16" thick, and 1 3/16" wide at the ricasso. The pommel is phyrigian style. There is no scabbard with this sword. This sword is among the most rare of early Japanese military swords.
