Due to his life circumstances of being born into a family that owned a famous women's clothing store on Fifth Avenue in New York City, he was familiar with fashion magazines from his boyhood. He particularly enjoyed the moving photographs of Martin Munkatch and studied photography in the early 40's at the famous design laboratory of Alexei Brodovich, the art director of Harper's Bazaar magazine at the time. Later, on his recommendation, she worked as a staff photographer for Harper's Bazaar magazine from 1946 to 1965. Blessed with excellent colleagues, Avedon dominated with his innovative fashion photography, incorporating documentary, collage, and portrait techniques.
