Description: RARE Vintage Homer Laughlin Eggshell Nautilus 11 pc Set for Card Playing, Tea, Snacks, Bridge, Cribbage, Card Deck - includes teacups, saucers, 8" plates and one 10" serving platter plate Very rare decaled set perfect for the card playing design collector! We have a matching card table cover that was likely made for these pieces! Would also make a lovely snack set for when having tea and playing cards with friends! This is a rare 11 piece set from Homer Laughlin's Eggshell Nautilus line that has playing card suits decorated on them - this set includes 3 tea cups with hearts, clovers, and spades with matching saucers and 8" plates - also has a diamond 8" plate and diamond 10" round platter. Beautiful set of plates and teacups! Almost a year had passed since the regular Nautilus line was put into production when HLC decided to use the shape as a basis for a new type of body called Eggshell. Rhead would often call this a "talc body" but it was really a special combination, light weight clay. Some vintage ads identify the primary mineral involved as Tremolite - or Calcium Magnesium Silicate Hydroxide Ca2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2. The flatware for Nautilus Eggshell is the same as the regular Nautilus version, but the hollowware is different. Hundreds of decals were used on Nautilus Eggshell from its introduction until it was discontinued in the early 1960s. It and Virginia Rose are arguably the most decorated shapes HLC produced. Nautilus Eggshell was a sharp contrast to the Art Deco and Streamline shapes for the 1930s and '40s as well as the more casual lines of the '50s. In most catalogs from the 1950s, Nautilus Eggshell is usually offered alongside Georgian Eggshell and the last eggshell shape made by Homer Laughlin, Cavalier. Condition: Set is overall in very good vintage condition. No chips or cracks on any of the plates or saucers. The spade teacup has a bottom rim chip and the clover teacup has a small top edge fleabite. The 10" round platter has a factory glaze skip on the red line around the outer edge. Little to no under the glaze crazing. It is likely the playing card design decal was added later as the pieces do have different glaze tones in places that make the plates whiter in some areas. Pieces may have other factory production imperfections such as sand bumps, glaze skips, glaze pops, etc. Great vintage condition for these rare piece. See all photos.
