Description: Tripolis, Phoenicia | Hadrian | AE25 Reference:RPC III 3829; BMC 48 Date: 117 CE Obverse: ΑΥΤΟΚΡ ΚΑΙСΑΡ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟС ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟС; laureate bust right Reverse: ΤΡΙΠΟΛƐΙΤΩΝ ΗΚΥ (Year 428 = 117 CE) ; draped busts of the Dioscuri jugate, r.; each wearing laureate pileus surmounted by star. Mint: Tripolis, Phoenicia Size: 24.8 mm Weight: 8.83 grams A decent sized provincial issue from the ancient city of Tripolis ( modern Tripoli, Lebanon). Castor and Pollux, also known as the Gemini or Dioscuri , were prominent figures in Greek and Roman mythology. They are represented on this coin's reverse wearing their characteristic Phyringian caps adorned with stars. These semi-divine twins were thought of as the saviors of sailors in distress and thus were a natural choice for the maritime city of Tripolis. Please note that the orange highlighting on this coin is most likely an artificial "desert patina". Unfortunately this practice has become commonplace and genuine ancient coins are artificially patinated in an attempt to increase their value. If desired, it can be easily removed with warm soapy water, IPA, or acetone. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
