The USS North Carolina assisted in the repatriations of remains 14 years after the USS Maine was destroyed. The USS Maine was raised in 1911 and found her final resting place in the Strait of Florida, on March 16, 1912. The RPPC Photographer was stationed or embedded on the USS North Carolina. Images of Crew as well, when not on-duty. The USS Maine unexpectedly and without explanation was destroyed in Havana Harbor, Cuba, in February of 1898. After lying on the bottom of Havana harbor for fourteen years, the USS Main was raised. Inflammatory articles blamed Spain, and "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry during the Spanish-American War. The ship's main mast is now a memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. …“REMEMBER THE MAINE”… Additional Information: On 17 February 1912, the engineers had worked on and successfully refloated the USS Maine. The USS Maine was towed out of Havana Harbor by the tug Osceola. The bodies of its crew were then removed to the armored cruiser North Carolina for repatriation. On 16 March, the USS Maine was towed four miles from the Cuban coast by Osceola, escorted by North Carolina and the light cruiser Birmingham. She was loaded with dynamite as a possible aid to her sinking.Flowers adorned Maine's deck, and an American flag was strung from her jury mast. At 5pm local time, with a crowd of over 100,000 persons watching from the shore, her seacocks were opened. Just over twenty minutes later, USS Maine sank, bow first, in 600 fathoms (3,600 ft.) of water, to the sound of taps and the twenty-one-gun salutes of USS Birmingham and USS North Carolina.During the salvage, remains of 66 more were found, of whom only one, Harry J. Keys (an engineering officer), was identified and returned to his hometown; the rest were reburied at Arlington National Cemetery, making a total of 229 buried there.Location or Photographer known and listed or unknown.
