Children will enjoy looking at the entertaining, exuberant, cartoon illustrations and comparing the chaos pictured there to the words of the old song that loop across the pages. The following is a synopsis of the plot of this humorous story.: Over the river, Mama, Papa, and Baby Turkey, in 19th-century dress, embark for their vegetarian Thanksgiving feast at Grandmother's house. As Little Tom Turkey, carrying a Pilgrim doll, and his parents walk through the snowy woods, they meet an old gray horse that "knows the way to carry the sleigh", and does so literally, trotting up a hill with a sled tucked under one arm. Meanwhile, a hungry boy and his barely ferocious-looking hound are going over their plans to catch a gobbler for dinner. The dog starts sniffing around, and he and the boy give chase as the birds come into view. The turkeys have got to think fast before they become the main course! The turkeys end up dressing up as an odd-looking scarecrow and temporarily stop the pursuers in their tracks. Then, the horse screeches downhill on the sled right into the middle of everything, and the pie the turkeys were taking to Grandma's is ruined. But, this is Thanksgiving, after all, so the turkeys pick themselves up, and with the dog and horse, they continue on their way to Grandma's. All ends charming well though, as everyone sits down to a nice meal, except for the boy who is still outside, in the woods, hunting down his hound.
