The book is inscribed on the title page and has annotations on the roster in the appendix. The book presents a comprehensive history of the defense and battles of Charleston Harbor, including Fort Sumter and the adjacent islands, in 1863 to 1865 as part of the American Civil War. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, antique book is inscribed on the title page and is annotated on the roster at the back of the book. The author, Confederate Major John Johnson. Major Johnson served as a Major of Engineers for the Confederacy in the defense of Charleston; he later served as the Rector of St. Phillips Church in Charleston, SC. The book is in nice overall condition. It comes protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket (see photo #3). The book is presented in olive green covers, with gold lettering on the spine and a medallion on the cover. The exterior is clean, has no bumping and has mild rubbing to the covers. The book is clean. It has solid binding throughout, but hinges have been reinforced. The author wrote and signed in pencil on the title page and also made handwritten notes on the roster in the back of the book. The pages are clean and in excellent condition. It is not an ex-library book. The book has no smudging, stamps or pasteboards. It has very light foxing on a couple pages. Published in 1890 the book contains 276 pages of text and an extensive appendices, including rosters, official reports and correspondence, data and more – about a third of the book. It is illustrated throughout and contains three foldout plates and five foldout maps. One of the classics of the Civil War and rare when found with all its plates and illustrations as this copy has.
