About the Book:According to Robert Clark from the Arthur H. Clark Company, “Through Bonds of Love carries forward the Utah pioneer saga recounted in the author's Mountain Meadows Witness. Based on letters and other original sources, this is a dramatic tale filled with historical reality.” The author's grandmother, known as Priscilla, was a surviving child of Mountain Meadows Massacre who was kept in Utah and raised as a Mormon in Cedar City, Utah. Philip Klingensmith and his third wife, Betsy Cattle, raised her as their own child. John Urie, the author's grandfather who left a wealthy home in Scotland to join the LDS Church, settled in Cedar City to live among the Mormons. After watching Priscilla grow into a woman he took her into wedlock as his third wife. The story, based on history of the times, is about companion wives living in harmony. Excerpts from letters to and from John Urie and Priscilla reveals a bond of love. Many letters from John were written while he was in hiding from the marshals--because he had more than one wife. Other letters were written while he was serving missions in Scotland. The chapter telling about the massacre contains unpublished documentation pertaining to the tragedy. One source was found within the walls of an old house 114 years after the incident. Through Bonds of Love instills history of the state of Utah and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The history of Cedar City is brought to life through this moving story. Anna Jean Backus is a historian, genealogist, and writer of Mormon history. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
