Description: [St. Ives School] 1907 Signed and Dated Charcoal and Watercolour Portrait of a Young Woman (Hazel Rainey?) Charcoal and watercolour, with traces of pencil beneath on paper, laid onto backing card, signed and dated “E.U.J. 1907” in the lower right corner. Unframed. A well executed drawing showing a young woman in a blue dress. The reverse side showing a pencil annotation written on the original framer’s backing card noting their client’s address “Miss Hazel Rainie[sic] Albany Terrace. St. Ives Cornwall” The St. Ives Baptism Register for the late Victorian period sheds some light on the original owner of the picture who obviously had it framed back in 1907, Miss Pansie Zoe Hazel Rainey. She was the daughter of Joseph Hargrove Rainey and Pansie Annie Rainey, and together with Hazel’s sister Jocelyn Jerne Niena Rainey, lived together at Albany Terrace in St. Ives, Cornwall. She was born on October 1st 1881 and it seems that Hazel and her sister (born 16/1/83) were both baptised on the same day (October 30th 1895) whilst they were teenagers. The 1895 baptism record also notes the profession of Hazel’s father Joseph as a “Civil Engineer”. He also appears to have previously been a surveyor and estate agent in Nottingham, a partnership with a Walter Henry Hine in Angel Row Nottingham being dissolved in April 1882. The framer obviously mis-spelt her surname as “Rainie” on the reverse of the picture, and it is curious to note that she obviously preferred to take the name Hazel, rather than her mother’s first name of Pansie. It is extremely possible that the subject of the picture is Hazel herself, who would have been 25 or 26 years of age in 1907. Sadly, we do not know who the artist was and further research is needed. He or she certainly displays a high degree of accomplishment. Drawing approx 235x350mm., overall size (including backing card) approx. 243x375mm. Some surface abrasions to the thin outer border only, where an old card mount has been removed. Slight bending to the card which would be corrected when framed. A rather beautifully observed study.
