This wonderful good sized George III gold filled intaglio seal pendant has a rectangular foil backed chalcedony stone deeply carved with an extremely unusual scene of a magnificent winged griffin with curling tail, pricked ears and extended tongue with a sword plunged through its neck with blood dripping from the end, this is almost certainly a depiction of a scene from the Middle Ages where knights used to regularly fight griffins and dragons, the slayers of such beasts such as St George receiving eternal remembrance for their bravery and strength, the intaglio is highly detailed where individual feathers and even claws have been finely carved, the bevel-edged chalcedony bezel-set in a gold filled setting with a basket of fruit and flowers handle surrounded by scrolls and fluting work all leading to a large built in bail-an extraordinary one of a kind beautiful intaglio seal pendant! The pendant measures approximately 29mm x 19mm. The chalcedony measures about 17mm x 14mm. The pendant weighs approximately 11.4 grams.
