Description: Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony Riccardo Muti & Philharmonia Orchestra EMI CD. Muti gets the elation and the suffering of the hero. This grossly underrated score presents a side of Tchaikovsky that's close to Berlioz, both in its narrative sense and the orchestral palette, especially of the middle movements. The scherzo, lasting nearly nine minutes, is a real high point of orchestral writing, both fleet and substantial in its clusters of wind notes. You feel that it is narrating big events rather than putting a symphonic argument, but it has great passion and compels the ear. The end of the first movement blazes, and Muti's muscular approach and fierce rhythmic drive bring this out fully. The conclusion to the whole work is then quiet, contrary to expectation, which may account for its neglect. The sound quality is fairly close and perhaps lacking in bloom, but it does feel as if you are getting the textures unvarnished. Highly recommended!
