Cream cloth over boards with black titling on spine. Original red dust jacket. Condition: VG/G- Book is VG. The covers retain their bright appearance, clean with unworn edges. Text block and binding are square and firm. There are no markings, soil, foxing, or discolorations to the pages. The dust jacket is G-. Some small nicks to the d.j. along edges with one small deletion to upper left hand side of the front cover, 1.5cm open tear to top rear edge; a few scatterred small scuffs to rear panel. Remarks: Alexander Calder (1898 – 1976) was an American sculptor known both for his innovative mobiles (kinetic sculptures powered by motors or air currents) that embrace chance in their aesthetic, his static "stabiles", and his monumental public sculptures. Calder preferred not to analyze his work, saying, "Theories may be all very well for the artist himself, but they shouldn't be broadcast to other people." The pages of this children’s book are filled with nursery rhymes from Mother Goose and other classic stories compiled by former Guggenheim Director James Johnson Sweeney, alongside 85 of Calder's unique, whimsical, and pithy illustrations. What sets this children’s book of nursery rhymes apart from others is how Calder chose to interpret the stories.
