Remarks: Alexander Calder (1898 – 1976) was an American sculptor known both for his innovative mobiles (kinetic sculptures powered by motors or air currents) that embrace chance in their aesthetic, his static "stabiles", and his monumental public sculptures. Calder preferred not to analyze his work, saying, "Theories may be all very well for the artist himself, but they shouldn't be broadcast to other people." [Wikipedia] Calder's illustrations in Three Young Rats and Other Rhymes shows another side of his exuberant imagination. The pages of this children’s book are filled with nursery rhymes from Mother Goose and other classic stories compiled by former Guggenheim Director James Johnson Sweeney, alongside 85 of Calder's unique, whimsical, and pithy illustrations. What sets this children’s book of nursery rhymes apart from others is how Calder chose to interpret the stories. Most of Calder’s wire-like illustrations are humorous with a slightly sinister edge, and at times can be rather risqué. [Guggenheim Museum]
