Description: Two Native American – Chippewa – Totem Poles from Cass Lake, Minnesota, circa 1950s. Cass Lake is a Town within the Boundaries of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation and is an Active Tourist Area in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest. Fishing enthusiasts come to the area for Walleye, Northern Pike, and Muskie fishing. The Native American population took advantage of this opportunity to sell “Handcrafted Indian Design” items to visitors fishing in their area. The Taller Pole 10 ½” was made in 1951; whereas, the smaller Pole 5 ½” was made 1959. Both are in Good Original Condition. Interestingly, the Large Pole is made of higher quality wood and nailed together and identified. The smaller one is made more cheaply. I would guess that size was a factor, but it could be that that the cost of materials was on the rise. The 1951 Totem Pole is a classic example of Native Americans responding to the Tourist Trade with Appealing Indian Designed Handcraft. Please examine the photographs as a part of the description.
