Description: This original incense holder (candelero) has its origin in Teotihuacan, a civilization that flourished between 300 and 650 AD, the third period of this culture. During that time, Teotihuacan flourished and became the first metropolis in North America. Famous for its long avenue of the dead, its high pyramids and its ornate palaces, the city center was not only a place of worship, but also a place to exchange goods and ideas. Teotihuacan was later called “City of the Gods” by the Aztecs. Scholars agree that none of the pre-Columbian cities exceed the perfection of Teotihuacan. A great body of skilled and increasingly specialized crafters and artists worked to supply the ritual needs for idols, offertorial urns, incense burners, sculptures and murals for temples and tombs, ceremonial garments and ornaments. Candeleros (incense burners), such as this one, were used for the ritual of burning incense. The incense came from the copal tree which produces a sacred resin that was burned for ritual offerings and ceremonies. This burner is a typical vessel used in this culture. It has two finger deep holes where the copal resin was placed and burned, and two small openings on each side. It is engraved with diamond shaped lines. A faint smell of resin remains.
