MacGregor Jr. ---------------------------------------------- USS Stockdale DDG-106 is an Arleigh Burke Class guided-missile destroyer named in honor of Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale. The Vice Admiral was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service as an aviator and a POW for more than seven years after his plane was shot down during the VietNam War. He later in his career served as President of the Naval War College in Rhode Island as well as President of the Citadel Military College of South Carolina. In 1992, he ran for Vice President of the United States with Ross Perot on an Independent Ticket. The destroyer named for him is the third Navy ship to be named USS Stockdale. The first Stockdale ship was named for JT Stockdale in 1863 and decommissioned in 1865. She was a tinclad American Civil War Steamer. The second Stockdale was named for Lewis Stevens Stockdale and was a WW2 Destroyer Escort commissioned in 1942 and decommissioned in 1946. The current USS Stockdale was built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine and commissioned in April 2009. She is the 56th destroyer in her class. She is a Flight 2A Arleigh Burke Ship with the addition of two antisubmarine hangers for ASW helicopters and a new longer 5-inch/62-caliper naval gun. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts.
