Description: This gorgeous piece of vintage fabric is in a design which is called Tapa sometimes people refer to it as tiki fabric or Hawaiian fabric as well. But it is technically Tapa Cloth in terms of its design. Tapa cloth is a bark cloth made in the islands of the Pacific Ocean, primarily in Tonga and Samoa, but as far afield as Java, New Zealand, Papua, New Guinea, and Hawaii. Tapa can be painted in patterns that form a grid of squares, each of which contains geometrical patterns with repeated motifs such as fish and plants. In former times the cloth was primarily used for clothing, but now cotton and other textiles have replaced it. Nowadays Tapa is still often worn on formal occasions such as weddings or in a decorative capacity in one's home. This particular piece is very much like a bark cloth, but the weave is less tight almost like a burlap in its weave. It seems like the design has been applied to the fabric rather than woven in, which makes this a Tapa. Dimensions: ~45" wide x about 92" long. This is a good large piece for your next project. Colors: Browns, reds and golds. Condition: Excellent condition overall. This piece looks as if it were stored away for years!!!
