Description: Who ever heard of civilian women taking an active part in an infantry unit of the United States Army during wartime? One has only to examine the history of American warfare to realize that on occasion women have been involved. For example, during the Revolutionary War, many of the soldier's wives were with their husbands, cooking meals, washing clothes, and seeing to the wounded. Molly Pitcher is a prominent example. The Mormon Battalion was no different. The Government allowed each company to take four women as laundresses. some of the Battalion men who had the means took their wives and families. "Honorable Remembrance" lists 34 women who accompanied the Battalion. These women ranged in age from newlywed 18 year old Melissa Coray, to 49 year old Pheobe Draper Palmer Brown.
