Description: Original WW2 German "HEERESKARTE" (Army Map) of RUSSIA entitled "GORKIJ" (GORKY) - a city now known as "NIZHNY NOVGOROD". It's headed "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch", making it equivalent to a "RESTRICTED" British military map. Printed in January 1943 during a sustained German bombing campaign aimed at destroying GORKY's vital industries supporting the Red Army's war effort. The city had a number of key military manufacturing companies, including some producing tanks, and destruction of the city's capabilities had been a key component of Operation Barbarossa from the very start. The map was clearly captured by the Americans and passed to the US 'Army Map Service' (AMS) who added a unique archive serial number in the bottom right corner, and another identifying it as German in the bottom left. It then passed to the British 'Directorate of Military Survey' in 1950, where it was held as a 'UNIQUE COPY' before being superseded and disposed of by the War Office in 1964. However, there is a much later Ministry of Defence 'cancellation' stamp dating to the 1980's, so it must have remained elsewhere in the official British military archives. After that, it then found its way to Edinburgh University, who recently sold it off as part of a larger collection - hence their own ink stamping to margin. (From time to time, the government distributes excess stocks of Allied maps, along with smaller numbers of captured enemy examples, to various national institutions such as libraries, museums, universities etc.) Scale of 1:500,000. In great condition. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. (Seller's Ref - 2U / 183)
